Joe Buzzett is the Director of Technology Programs, General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems in St. Petersburg, Florida. He is responsible for coordinating the technology development activities across all of the company’s Strategic Business Units.
Mr. Buzzett has over 25 years of experience working for General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems and its predecessors, General Defense, Olin Ordnance, and Primex Technologies. He joined the ammunition research and development group of General Defense Corporation in 1988 as a research and development engineer. He has held positions of increasing responsibility including lead engineer, program manager, Director of Marketing, and Director of Research and Development for the Large Caliber Ammunition Strategic Business Unit. His experience includes the development of conventional and ElectroThermal- Chemical (ET-C) propulsion systems, Global Positioning System (GPS) and Semi-Active Laser (SAL) guided munitions, and advanced kinetic energy and multi-purpose tank ammunition. He received a patent in 1992 for an advanced kinetic energy tank ammunition concept.
In 2005, Mr. Buzzett was promoted to the Director, Technology Programs overseeing the Independent Research and Development (IRAD) and Contract Research and Development (CRAD) activities across the company. In this role he is the primary face to the customer for R&D efforts. He is currently serving on the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) Guns, Armaments, Rockets, and Missiles (GARM) Executive Steering Committee, the Industrial Advisory Board for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Advisory Council for the US Army Armament Research Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC). He was a member of the NATO Industrial Advisory Study Group for Low Cost Guided Munitions (2013-2014). He represents General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems on the General Dynamics Engineering and Technology Council.
Joe is a 1987 graduate of Tulane University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He also earned a Masters of Business Administration from the University of South Florida in 1998. He resides in Tampa with his wife, Dr. Jennifer Buzzett, and their daughters Jacqueline and Jordan.
